February 27 2005 - Toronto - City Centre

It has been a while since I've been flying out east - but now I'm back in Toronto so I've scheduled some time with an instructor and got a check-out with Island Air a couple of weeks ago. Today I'm PIC of a pleasure flight up to Lake Simcoe - to get to City Centre Airport one has to take a quick ferry ride which cuts through the wintery lake surface this time of the year:

After takeoff from runway 26 and a left-downwind departure I headed out east out of the CYTZ control-zone, under Toronto Terminal, then through the Clairemont Practice Area. The lake is already visible before passing Simcoe VOR (YSO) and is nicely frozen around this time. It's almost impossible to spot the cars and fishing-huts populating the lake on these pictures but they are there.
A glance at the cockpit of C-FKWO shows we're heading somewhere ... but where's radio uno?

So after about an hour of circling Lake Simcoe (that's enough for one trip around actually) and heading back south the Toronto skyline presents itself again. Tower says "follow the Don Valley Parkway, report crossing the shoreline, expect right downwind 08" and I manage to picture that in my head and acknowledge - pictures show passing the airport east of the field.

At this point I'm cleared for right-downwind and bring her around westwards passing the CN Tower before turning base. Last picture is actually not the runway 08 but runway 06 (wonder how many pilots landed on that one by 'accident') - it's still outside the co-pilot window to the right before turning final. A nice day for flying and almost nothing missed ... wish the air vents would have worked better in keeping the cold air out :)
