Jan 25th 2003 - Oakland (OAK) to Point Arena
On a recent trip along the norther California coastline past Santa Rosa I discovered the light-house of Point Arena. This flight day was set on finding it and capturing it on digital film.
So off I went - leaving Oakland and crossing the bay Mount Tam came into sight - fully covered into milky clouds. Staying clear and above those the routing was simple: just follow the coast:
It's a scenic flight looking down on small towns and villages and endless breakers storming the beaches:
I passed by Point Reyes national park, circled the light-house and watched the tour-busses shuttling hikers from the parking lots to the scenic spots.
A little bit of fog was rolling through when I finally arrived at Point Arena. The radio navigation aids indicated that here it had to be so peering down into the sea I did ... then it came into sight: the light-house in a white mist:
I decended staying well above the fog and circled for a couple of shots feeling like Mel Gibson trying to land his B-52 in "Forever Young". Apparently the Hollywood movie was shot here (click on the picture to the right to see the landscape without fog)   :)
A job well done - found the target - got the pictures! An uneventfull flight over scatted clouds brought the pilot back to Oakland.
Over and Out.
