June 16th 2001 - Ottawa (CYOW) - IFR Training under the hood |
Another IFR training flight was scheduled for today - we had a couple of very warm, humid days in Ottawa and the ride got quite rough. Avoiding the thunderstorm cells and staying VFR was the challenge today :)
We left Ottawa for a hold at the YOW VOR - looking at the track it doesn't look to bad - not the straight lines my instructor likes to see but we stayed in our "hold airspace". Due to the thunderstorm activity we headed back to Ottawa, tracking the localizer outbound - a hockey-stick course-reversal and the ILS 32 approach. After a missed-approach we headed out east. I tried the modified race-track course-reversal (hockey-stick would have been better) and we came in for the Loc(BC) 25 approach. Then another missed-approach and a landing on runway 22:
And here's another black-box transcript - about 7 minutes of radio-chatter. It's quite interesting when Farz and I get closer to the thunderstorm and more frantic. That's the stuff you don't want the passengers to listen to live :)
